Canada’s largest publicly traded marijuana company says it has had a hard time keeping up with demand for high-potency pot as its list of registered medical marijuana patients more than tripled at the end of last year.

Canopy Growth Corp. says about one-third of its customers want moderate to high levels of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, and they’re willing to pay a premium price for it.

“And we really didn’t have that in the (October-December) quarter — almost ever,” CEO Bruce Linton said Tuesday on a conference call after the company reported its third quarter results.

Linton said Canopy Growth has been hurrying to meet demand, expanding its production capacity and acquiring other producers. It also saw its medical marijuana patient base balloon to 29,000 at the end of last year from 8,000 as of Dec. 31, 2015.

To meet demand, Canopy Growth has been developing a medical marijuana product containing 27 per cent THC over the last 18 months. It’s awaiting regulatory approval to start production.

The company also reported $1 million in sales in a single day for the first time, on Feb. 1, a remarkable number considering total revenue during the third quarter was less than $10 million.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Canopy Collective , the Ohio City handmade and vintage shop, will close its doors on Oct. 28. Erika Jaenke co-founded the shop in spring of 2015 in the former Buck Buck art gallery at 3910 Lorain Ave.

Canopy will host closing parties on Oct. 14 and 28, when the store will extend its hours to 9 p.m. for last-minute purchases. More dates may be announced via social media .

In addition to selling goods by more than 100 local artists, it has also been home to studios and a gallery show space. It quickly grew into a destination for entertainment, regularly hosting shows as varied as comedy, avant-garde performance, film screenings and live music.

It also served as a space for workshops and community meetings. Painting, dance and youth art classes took place regularly. Monthly art shows spanned mediums, featuring up-and-comers, pop-up events and established Cleveland names.

"The entire purpose of the place was to give people opportunities who deserve them but might not have a place for that," Jaenke says. "Artists could sell things in the shop, people could rent studios to start their careers. We could show work in the gallery by people who might not have connections to other galleries. It was about providing space for people to try things out."

Jaenke is moving on to a full-time role as general manager of Cleveland Bagel Co., the Detroit-Shoreway shop that was a winner of the LeBron James-produced television show, Cleveland Hustles. The position was created for Jaenke, who has worked for the business since November, as it continues to grow.
